14 Below, located at 1348 14th, Santa Monica, will reopen its doors on Wednesday, March 12. The club, which has been closed for a year, was recently reclaimed by its original owner Todd Christiansen, who also owns Los Angeles’s historic venue The Mint.
Christiansen founded 14 Below in 1993 and oversaw its operation through 2007. After a three year hiatus from the club, Christiansen has teamed up with Mint and Viper Room talent buyer Casey Phillips, and the two of them are planning big things to breathe new life into the 250-capacity room and bring nightly live music back to an area severely lacking a live music scene.
Prior ownership had left 14 Below closed for the past year, but March 12 the fireworks hit at the Grand Re-opening with headliner Warner Drive, a 5-piece high energy Hollywood rock/punk band, who regularly headline iconic Sunset Strip rock clubs. As a House Of Blues Sunset headliner in 2009, Warner Drive sold out the venue to 1200+ loyal fans. They have also opened for platinum-selling band The Killers, 2008.
Christiansen is completely revamping 14 Below’s sound system with top quality audio equipment. The club will be booking a run of bands to the beginning of summer 2010. Most shows will either be free or only a $5 cover.
Bands interested in playing at 14 Below should email links to their music and their LA show history to 14belowbooking@gmail.com.
14 Below operates a full bar and kitchen. Nightly drink specials will be offered from open to close. Christiansen says the food menu will see the return of the club’s Philly Cheese Steak, the uber popular crowd favorite during his prior ownership.
Sometime this summer Christiansen and Phillips plan to temporarily close the club for a full remodel.
